Company History

Chaney Instrument Company is the established leader in weather, temperature and time products. Our brands, ACU-RITE® and CHANEY®, are widely recognized for accuracy, quality and ease of use. Our products are readily available at all major retailers.

The company was founded in 1943 as a manufacturer of thermometers for industry and home. One of the first products invented and patented was the glass tube candy thermometer that is still in use today. In 1987 Chaney Instrument Company became part of the Primex Family of Companies. The company invested in clock and thermometer technologies to become one of the largest manufacturers of quartz clock movements in the US with an annual output of over 10 million motors. With a continued focus on innovation and technology Chaney Instrument pioneered a line of analog atomic clocks in 1998. These are also known as radio-controlled clocks because they synchronize with the WWVB signal from the government’s atomic clock located in Colorado. The clocks set themselves and maintain accuracy to the split-second. In 2003, the clock line expanded with the development of Set-n-Forget® clocks that automatically reset for daylight saving time. Most recently, we added the patented Self-Calibrating Weather Forecasting technology to our ACURITE weather stations. This provides the most accurate level of weather forecasting without the need for inputting altitude.

Today, we are still a family-owned business based in idyllic Lake Geneva, Wisconsin with offices in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China. We remain committed to our customers, our employees and our environment.
